Morgans Seaside Classic – Port Macquarie GC

 5th & 6th  August 2017

Despite a late stumble, Nathan Waters finished even par for the thirty six holes to win the Morgans’ Seaside Classic at Port Macquarie Golf Club over the weekend. The Forster Tuncurry golfer had an opening round of 70 to trail last year’s runner up Zac Mullens of The Australian Golf Club by one shot. By the time he got to the 14th hole in the final round Waters was at four under par. However he then dropped four shots in four holes. Waters’ final total of 142 gave him a five shots win over Mullens with four players a further shot back. The countback for third was won by Mark Hale of Mudgee. One of those counted out for third place was Port Macquarie youngster Jackson Jubelin who showed a maturity way beyond his years. Jubelin opened with a round of 73 to be equal third overnight, thus placing him in the main seeded group with Mullens, Waters and Brayden Petersen from The Vintage. With the other players in the leading group dropping shots as the conditions became tougher around the back nine, Jubelin held his game together to get to outright second place before having a putting disaster on the last green, which saw him drop two shots. He leaves for the US next week where he will go to college in Seattle on a golfing scholarship. Mick Couper won the 36 holes nett with 135 and Shane Madden was runner up on 138. The first round scratch went to Jubelin from Petersen, both with 73. Glen Kershaw took out the nett and Nick Ratcliffe was the runner up, both with 71 nett. Former Port Macquarie golfer Kyle Flynn, now at Wynnum in Queensland, had 72 to win the round 2 scratch on a countback from Jay McKenzie of Ballina. The nett was won by Phil Pye with 70, one better than Peter McGregor from Liverpool.
