NSW Country Championships 2021

2021 NSW Country Golf Championships

The 2021 NSW Country Golf Championships were played at Forbes Golf Club on the weekend of the 6th and 7th of November. The Lower North Coast District sent a team of six consisting of Rod Moran and Brad Germon form Tuncurry, Matt Waltz from Taree, Anthony Boyd and Matt Mudford from Wauchope and Lyndsay Neilson from Port Macquarie. The Forbes Golf Club was beautifully presented and proved challenging especially the hard greens that were dome shaped and offered no spin. The green shape meant that approach shots had to be conservative and it took some time to figure them out.

The teams event was convincingly won by ACT/Monaro followed by Newcastle and third Hunter. These teams were favourites to win the event with their advantage in talent depth. Lower North Coast finished a commendable 8th out of 11 although a much higher position was hoped for.

The individual honours were taken by Harry Bolton from Royal Canberra with a score of -9 for the two days. James Comerford from Dubbo was second with -8 followed by Jye Pickin from Charlestown and Matt Thomas from Deniliquin. The highest placed member of the Lower North Coast team was Lyndsay Neilson who was 38th overall. Matt Mudford was the second placed Lower North Coast team member who finished 42nd. Matt Waltz, Brad Germon, Anthony Boyd and Rod Moran finished in that order.

Lower North Coast Captain, yours truly, was proud of the team and the time sacrifice to travel to Forbes. Some of the team had difficulty practicing before the event due to COVID and work commitments. Hopefully in 2022 we will have a more “normal” year with District Championships, Pennants, Inter-district events, Regional Championships and Country Championships to look forward to.
