David Bagust wins Australian men’s senior amateur championship

Posted on 16th October, 2019

The week before the Australian men’s senior amateur championship, David Bagust took a boat with his wife, sister and brother-in-law and sailed around the Whitsundays, forgetting about golf. It worked a treat for the businessman from Port Macquarie. Bagust, 62, arrived at Maroochy River Golf Club for this year’s nationals on a mission; today, he took the lead into the third and final round and held on to win by two shots. It is the New South Welshman’s biggest-ever triumph in any form of golf. He had only played once previously in the national championship, although he is a former club champion at St Michaels in Sydney, and captain of his district in Port Macquarie, his adopted hometown since 1996. He came up the 18th hole knowing he had a three-shot lead over fellow-New South Welshman Peterson, who ended up finishing second. “I didn’t put the drive in the water,” he said. “I told (playing partner) Ian Frost ‘I’m hitting my ball over the green’. Which I did, but I got up and down for par.” Bagust shot 74-71-71 to finish even-par overall, good scoring in windy conditions. Later, he headed off for a well-deserved celebratory drink with family and friends. “It was always a little tense,’’ he said. “I’ve never been in that situation before. I’ve got to say the people I played with were very friendly, Lester Peterson and (Queenslander) Ian Frost. I’d played with Ian the two previous days and we were encouraging each other and Lester’s a gentleman. That made it that bit easier.’’ Victoria’s Gordon Claney, the defending champion, finished third. “I got a little stale a couple of weeks ago,’’ said Bagust, who has twice been runner-up in Port Macquarie’s club championship. “I spent the week in the Whitsundays without a golf club near me, and that was probably the best preparation that I could have had. I work for myself (running an internet service provider) and I can play pretty much when I want, and I practise a bit, and I’d overdone it.” Victoria’s team of Claney, Greg Rhodes, Colin George and Steve Valentine won the teams...

Quedesha Golledge wins Wagga Junior Masters

Posted on 19th February, 2019

The LNC juniors got 2019 off to a fantastic start by winning the JNJG Junior Pennants at Newcastle in January and now at the first “Masters” for the year at Wagga Wagga, KCC/Taree junior Quedesha Golledge has taken out the girls 14/15 year title not only winning the gross section by 1 shot but also the nett (JNJG rules wont allow a player to win both gross & nett so Quedesha takes out the gross event). With rounds of 81 and 81 (162) and finishing 6 under her handicap with her nett result, Quedesha has now set herself up for a great year which will culminate with automatic entry to the year ending JNJG Championships at Bonville Golf Club. Quedesha was a member of our winning Pennants team. The next Master is at Bathurst on March 23/24 and the LNC is going to have a strong representation at this event with many of our talented girls and boys traveling for this weekend of top class golf. I encourage all of you to think about playing in as many “Masters” events as possible as these events set the standard for junior golf in NSW. Well done...

NSW Junior Pennant title won by LNCDGA

Posted on 18th January, 2019

I am delighted to advise that the LNCDGA junior pennant team (Fletcher Murray KCC, Oli Payne PM, Pyper Hollis KCC/Taree, Danny Bisby Taree/Wingham, Madeleine Laws-Farrell PM & Quedesha Golledge KCC/Taree) are the 2018 JNJG NSW Junior Pennant CHAMPIONS. On Monday morning at Newcastle Golf Club in head to head match play, LNC beat Kiama  4 matches to 2 with Fletcher, Danny, Madds & Quedesha winning. On a very hot & steamy Tuesday morning we played Toukley in the final. The matches were close for much of the morning but the LNC finally got the upper hand and came away as 5 matches to 1 winners. Our only loss was Oli, who was one down at the 18th after fighting back from 4 down at the half way mark. All six of our players were simply magnificent and were well led by captain Fletcher in the #1 position. I firmly believe the team spirit and camaraderie among our six players had a big bearing on our win as they continued to encourage each other as the matches progressed regardless of whether they were up or down. Summary: V Kiama – Fletcher W 2/1, Oli L 4/2, Pyper L 3/2, Danny W 2/1, Madds W 8/7, Quedesha W 3/1                    V Toukley – Fletcher W 3/2, Oli L 1 down, Pyper W 2/1, Danny W 2/1, Mads W 5/4, Quedesha W 2 up I want to personally congratulate all six players on outstanding golf they played which led to their wonderful win. In particularly I want to thank Oli Payne for playing in the #2 spot. Oli has not had the time for much practice or tournament golf during 2018 due to his studies but he put his hand up when we need him, played some great golf and added enormously to the team spirit. Finally I want to encourage all our LNC juniors to play as much club golf as their busy schedules will allow, to take every opportunity to obtain coaching from their club professional or their academy staff who are always there to help them, to play in as many tournaments as they can especially our local junior classics, the North Coast Junior Masters, the LNC junior championships and to be ready to represent the LNC at future events. Later this year we will be selecting a team to defend our JNJG junior pennant title, a team to compete in the JNJG Encourage Shield, a team to compete in the Col Johnson Four ways tournament in the Hunter Valley and we have three inter district matches scheduled in 2019. I know you have already received the 2019 junior calendar with all events listed but I am attaching another copy just in case the first one went astray. If you need any other information please let me know. It is going to be another big year for junior golf in the lower north coast and it has certainly got off to a GREAT START!! Regards to you all and happy golfing Howard Burrows LNCDGA –...
